Recently started using Windows 7 64bit at work and I wanted to change my network gateway to use a different broadband line. I did the usual thing, went into the properties of my Local Area Connection, Properties of TCP /IPv4, Advanced, Default Gateways, Add. Added the IP address, perfect, has always worked before. Until now. 7 would just not accept it. Tried repairing the connection, restarting the PC. Nothing worked. I was starting to get frustrated!

There is quite a simple solution though. Just set your network card to use a static IP address and gateway and it works fine.

Easy.

Has your company switched to Google Apps and you’re wondering how to get your emails in Goldmine? It’s actually quite easy. (I say Google Apps, but this will work for personal use Gmail as well as Google Apps Mail).

First you need to enable IMAP on your Google Mail account (if it isn’t already). In Google Mail go to Settings. Then click the Forwarding and POP/IMAP tab> Check the radio button to enable IMAP.

Now set up Goldmine to connect to GMail. In Goldmine go to Tools> User settings> Preferences> Email. In the Getting mail section set the server to IMAP and enter address imap.gmail.com. Username is your email address, password is your password. Check the ‘Use encrypted connection (SSL)’ box.

In the Sending Mail section the SMTP server is smtp.gmail.com, return address is your email address. Again, check the ‘Use encrypted connection (SSL)’ box.

Done

Recently had this problem at work after I had modified the log on script to add a new printer. You may have noticed in Windows Vista & 7 when you add a network printer a message box pops up asking you to confirm to install the printer driver.

Well our log on script is set to run and complete before the desktop loads, so because the desktop hasn’t loaded yet you never see the pop up message asking you to confirm to install the printer driver. So the PC just sits there with a blank screen waiting for you to click yes or no on a pop up box that you can’t see!

The solution? Log onto the PC using a local account or a network account that doesn’t have a log on script (maybe the network administrator), add all the network printers you need. Log back off and log on as normal. Solved!

I thought I would give Microsoft Expression Web a go recently and was using it to edit some PHP files. Big mistake! I suddenly started getting PHP error messages that the headers had already been sent out, such as:

Cannot send session cache limiter – headers already sent

and

Cannot modify header information – headers already sent by

Very annoying! I couldn’t spot anything wrong with the files in Notepad or Dreamweaver. I was very confused. So I decided to open the files in my web hosts online text editor. Lo and behold, Expression Web had put some odd characters before the opening PHP tags on a couple of files! I removed the characters in the text editor and now everything is working fine again.

Moral of the story? Microsoft is rubbish!
